Marshall is a lyrical genius

I am deeply convinced that Eminem is a contemporary poet. He handles words like nobody. I had the pleasure to express about his masterpiece or work "Stan,"Drug Ballad" and some other great songs. So here are some of my articles: A CREATIVE MASTERING OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE There is one thing I particularly admire in Eminem's artistic expression: his creative mastering of the English language. He's a genius at work.
Since he began rapping, Eminem understood the power of words. Words can be strong weapons that will knock you right in the face. Words also have the power to make you laugh or cry. Eminem's style makes him unique in the world of hip hop.
Several lines of the “Love Me” song from the 8 Mile soundtrack testify it very well: “There's a certain mystique when I speak,
that you notice that it's sorta unique,
cause you know it's me, my poetry's deep…'' His savant combination of syllables  and the use of words that sound nearly the same make us feel the athmosphere of the song, whether it is stressful, funny, serious or sarcastic.
The combination of the [i] sound at the beginning of the 8 Mile song shows us that Rabbit is battling. You can feel the fight. “Sometimes I just feel like, quittin I still might
Why do I put up this fight, why do I still write
Sometimes it's hard enough just dealin with real life
Sometimes I wanna jump on stage and just kill mics
And show these people what my level of skill's like
But I'm still white, sometimes I just hate life
Somethin ain't right, hit the brake lights
Case of the stage fright, drawin a blank like” The listener will easily guess the doubts and the stress that surrounds Rabbit.
Rabbit wants to succeed, he knows he will have to fight hard. The [i] sound words are so well choosen write/ life/mics/ white/ fright/ lights/ blank like Rabbit knows that he cannot quit writing if he wants to succeed. Often he's brought back to real life, to concrete problems, but he also has to face the stage battle and spit his words on the mic.
"I'm still white" sounds so sarcastic. Of course he is still white and he knows cannot change his skin color. He will have to face with his racial issue and fight even harder to reach his goal, knowing that he's a white M.C.
Eminem exactly knows what kind of effects he wants to create in his songs. His art is poetry. <i>« Ayo, my pen and paper cause a chain reaction
To get your brain relaxin, cause they be actin maniac in action » I particularly love the way those lines from the « Infinite song » from the Infinite album are composed. Can you imagine a pen and paper sheet having a chain reaction?  It draws the picture of an inspired M.C whose brain is full of thoughts. His thoughts are so numerous that he cannot control the flooding of the words that he pendowns on his paper sheet. He writes so fast that the paper vanishes very fast.

« My rhyming skills got you climbing hills
I travel through your mind until you spine like siren drills  » The listener is being taken apart with a high level of rhymes. Eminem perfectly knows how to handle words. He also combines words that usually wouldn't match. The listener will enjoy his wordplays if he pays attention to them. Eminem opens new universes of words, he uses his art to perfection.
With such a high level of skills, no wonder if he sometimes verbally kills. COMMENTS ON THE 8 MILE SONG [ Eminem]
Sometimes I just feel like, quittin I still might

Why do I put up this fight, why do I still write
Sometimes it's hard enough just dealin with real life
Sometimes I wanna jump on stage and just kill mics
And show these people what my level of skill's like
But I'm still white, sometimes I just hate life
Somethin ain't right, hit the brake lights
Case of the stage fright, drawin a blank like
Da-duh-duh-da-da, it ain't my fault
Great big eye balls, my insides crawl
and I clam up I just slam shut
I just can't do it, my whole manhood's
just been stripped, I've just been ripped
So I must then get, hope the bus didn't split
Man fuck this shit yo, I'm goin the fuck home
World on my shoulders as I run back to this 8 Mile Road [Chorus]
I'm a man, I'ma make a new plan
Time for me to just stand up, and travel new land
Time for me to just take matters into my own hands
Once I'm over these tracks man I'ma never look back
(8 Mile Road) And I'm gone, I know right where I'm goin
Sorry momma I'm grown, I must travel the alone
Ain't gonna follow no footsteps, I'm makin my own
Only way that I know how to escape from this 8 Mile Road [Eminem]
I'm walkin these train tracks, tryin to regain back
the spirit I had 'fore I go back to the same crap
To the same plant, in the same pants
Tryin to chase rap, gotta move ASAP
And get a new plan, momma's got a new man
Poor little baby sister, she don't understand
Sits in front of the TV, buries her nose in the pad
And just colors until the crayon gets dull in her hand
While she colors her big brother, her mother and dad
Ain't no tellin what really goes on in her little head
Wish I could be the daddy that neither one of us had
But I keep runnin from somethin I never wanted so bad!
Sometimes I get upset, cause I ain't blew up yet
It's like I grew up, but I ain't grow me two nuts yet
Don't gotta rep my step, don't got enough pep
The pressure's too much man, I'm just tryin to do what's best
And I try, sit alone and I cry
Yo I won't tell no lie, not a moment goes by
That I don't pray to the sky, please I'm beggin you God
Please don't let me be piegon holed in no regular job
Yo I hope you can hear me homey wherever you are
Yo I'm tellin you dawg I'm bailin this trailer tomorrow
Tell my mother I love her, kiss baby sister goodbye
Say whenever you need me baby, I'm never too far
But yo I gotta get out there, the only way I know
And I'ma be back for you, the second that I blow
On everything I own, I'll make it on my own
Off to work I go, back to this 8 Mile Road [Chorus] [Eminem]
You gotta live it to feel it, you didn't you wouldn't get it
Or see what the big deal is, why it was and it still is
To be walkin this borderline of Detroit city limits
It's different, it's a certain significance, a certificate
of authenticity, you'd never even see
But it's everything to me, it's my credibility
You never seen heard smelled or met a real MC
who's incredible, up on the same pedestal as me
But yet I'm still unsigned, havin a rough time
Sit on the porch with all my friends and kick dumb rhymes
Go to work and serve MC's in the lunchline
But when it comes crunch time, where do my punchlines go
Who must I show, to bust my flow
Where must I go, who must I know
Or am I just another crab in the bucket
Cause I ain't havin no luck with this little Rabbit so fuck it
Maybe I need a new outlet, I'm startin to doubt shit
I'm feelin a little skeptical who I hang out with
I look like a bum, yo my clothes ain't about shit
at Salvation Army tryin to salvage an outfit
And it's cold, tryin to travel this road
Plus I feel like I'm old, stuck in this battlin mode
My defenses are so up, and one thing I don't want
is pity from no one, the city is no fun
There is no sun, and it's so dark
Sometimes I feel like I'm just bein pulled apart
from each one of my limbs, by each one of my friends
It's enough to make me just wanna jump out of my skin
Sometimes I feel like a robot, sometimes I just know not
what I'm doin I just blow, my head is a stove top
I just explode, the kettle gets so hot
Sometimes my mouth just overloads the gas that I don't got
But I've learned, it's time for me to U-turn
Yo it only takes one time for me to get burned
Ain't no fallin on next time I meet a new girl
I can no longer play stupid or be immature
I got every ingredient, all I need is the courage
Like I already got the beat, all I need is the words
Got the urge, suddenly it's a surge
Suddenly a new burst of energy is occured
Time to show these free world leaders the three and a third
I am no longer scared now, I'm free as a bird
Then I turn and cross over the median curb
Hit the burbs and all you see is a blur from 8 Mile Road
[Chorus] The 8 Mile song is my favorite from all Eminem songs. It is a great hymn of hope. The first part exposes Jimmy Smith's struggle. Jimmy has to face a double fight: his struggle as a white M.C for recognition and his harsh conditions of living. He feels divided between real life and the place where he wants to be.
His stagefright and the racism he experiences during his rap battles add a lot to the pressure he feels. The second part describes his monotonous life as a worker at Detroit Stamping. He is also worried for his half sister who lives in unstable conditions with her alcoholic mom. He wants to protect her and wishes to play the role of their absent father, but he knows he has to fight for a better future first.
He's got so much pressure put on his shoulders and it comes from so many directions (home, work, stage). He addresses to God, he doesn't want to go on living his monotonous life, he wants to escape from 8 Mile Road. In the third part, Jimmy suddenly becomes conscious of his value. He is still unsigned and having a rough time, but now he feels the urge to act the right way. He knows ”he got every ingredient, all he needs is the courage”. He is no longer scared of the “Free World leaders”. He can feel his freedom and is able to smell the taste of his future victory. He is ready to drop bombs on his mic. This song shows a path of hope to many people who are going through harsh conditions of living. It shows us that it is possible to escape to our “8 Mile road” if we don't give up your dreams. We all got every ingredient. All we need is the courage to fight to the end and enough faith in our dreams.

Eminem's "Stan" is poetry

As Giles Foden expressed it before, “Stan” is a masterpiece of work. Mr Foden says that “Stan” has the depth of the Shakespeare verses. I totally agree with him on the fact that “Stan” is great poetry.

As a French citizen, I dare comparing “Stan“ to Rimbaud's “Le Dormeur du Val”. Even if the story is different, the structure of both works is similar. Rimbaud's poem first pictures a sleeping man, lying down in the grass near a river.

Gradually the reader understands that the young man is a dead soldier: “he's white as a sheet and he's got two holes on his right side”.
The pictures drawn in Stan's story are similar. It's the story of a fan writing to his favorite singer : he shares pains and sorrows with him, tells him that his girlfriend is pregnant.

Of course, he‘s disappointed, because Eminem is late in answering his letters.

Gradually, the listener understands that Stan is sick (“sometimes I cut myself to see how much it bleeds, it's like adrenaline, the pain is such a sudden rush for me”) and his passion for Eminem becomes more and more obsessional.

The last picture is terrifying : Stan driving his car off the bridge with his pregnant girlfriend inside....

Stan is also a warning for each fan and listener not to misinterpret Eminem's words and this song really proves Eminem doesn't want his words to be taken litterally.

For those who still think he's a violent mysogynist, remember who ties his girlfriend up : it is Stan ,not Eminem. Eminem tells Stan to treat his girfriend better “I really think you and you girlfriend need each other/Or maybe you just need to treat her better).

He never encourages him to act foolishly (“I'm glad I inspire you,but Stan why are you so mad,try to understand that I want you as a fan. I just don't want you to do some crazy shit.")

Who said Eminem is a bad influence?

The man who played "Stan" in Eminem's video

Those who don't know him are probably curious to know who he actually is. His name is Devon Sawa. He's an actor. He perfectly fits into his role and manages to create the atmosphere of Stan's drama.
Eminem and his crew had different people in mind to be Stan, but Eminem says that Devon was perfect as « Stan »:

“ We were looking at a few different people to be Stan. We were looking at Macaulay Culkin to be Stan, but he ended up having prior arrangements, I guess, so he couldn't do it.

“But Devon is actually perfect for the role, now that we've watched him do his thing,” he continued. “He fits right into it. We were doing something on camera yesterday, and we were watching a tape back, and it was him, and then it was my take to do the exact same thing, and we couldn't tell through the camera which one was my take and which was his.”

In fact, Dr Dre thought about Devon Sawa because he had watched « Final Destination » and liked it.

A website: reminds us of interesting details we might have missed while watching the « Stan » video:

1. The date of birth on the headstone, seems to be Eminem's!!!
2. At the end, while Slim is writing to him, Stans body is levitating at the window!!!
3. Stan only ever refers to Eminem as ‘Slim'. This means he was relating to Eminem's evil, alter ego, Slim Shady, and not the real Marshall Mathers.
4. Although Stan is played by an actor, he does in fact have a very similar tattoo, as Marshall, at the top of his left arm.
5. The news Broadcaster describes the accident as, “Double Murder"! Although it wasn't murder and one of the victims was a foetus.
6. Stan's little bro. Matthew. Bleaches his hair like Eminem's, at the end.
7. The News Reader is the same as the news reader in the “Forgot About Dre” Video! The info was found here:

More about Devon Sawa

Devon Sawa was born on September the 7th in Vancouver.
He started acting in a school play in kindergarten. Devon Sawa has played in many movies like « Little Giants », « Now And Then », « Final Destination »…
He has also participated to Canadian Shows like « Kid Zone » and « The Odyssey »
People who have watched Stan probably know that Devon Sawa has tattoos: a cartoon devil on one arm and a cross on the other arm.

Although I haven't watched Devon Sawa's movies, I must give him full credit for acting as « Stan » in Eminem's video. He was convincing in the role of an obsessional and crazy fan.

Drug Ballad

“Drug Ballad” is one of several songs from the Marshall Mathers LP Eminem has performed in front of us at his unforgettable show in Paris Bercy 2003. “Drug Ballad” lets you travel into the mind of a drug user. You can feel the sensations he gets through the rythm and the words. It's like feeling words spinning around you. Words that are artistically expressed by a brilliant poet. The poetic value of “Drug Ballad” has been deeply analyzed on this website. Check it out: http://literaryhigh.joeuser.com/articleComments.asp?AID=1383 (appearently the article is hardly available, so i pasted it for you to read it) By JeremyG

Discussion: Music I've actually had this post in mind for a while now and was trying to come up with the proper way to present this. The result is a 2 (or maybe 3) part post about who I consider one of greatest artists of present day.

Just for a few minutes let's assume nothing about the content of Eminem's lyrics. Let's pretend they're just vulgar nonsense meant to attract publicity. Let's pretend that youth has no ability to discern sarcasm, humor, or perform any of their own interpretation. Let's assume that children are a product of what they hear, and that Ozzy Osborne created thousands of Satan worshipers. Let's pretend that speaking of bad things is bad.

We'll tackle the above discussions in part 2, but for Part 1 of this analysis of good'ol Slim Shady all of the above is completely irrelevant. Part 1 is about the technicalities of his writing ability. I love to write. Many times I like to write quick, witty, fast-changing verse. At least I thought I did….until I heard Eminem . After I listened to the Slim Shady LP, I literally threw out a lot of things I had written that I thought were good. He's truly a brilliant writer, and if you don't agree by the end of this, then maybe you don't understand the art of crafting words.

So what is it that makes his songs so….pleasant? addictive? Catchy? Why do kids (and adults) like the general sound of the music? The answer is very very good writing and to show this I took the first verse of one of his songs and analyzed it from a poetic standpoint. This is “ Drug Ballad ”.

Now let's take a look at the meter and rhyme of this.

This starts off with a pair of trochaic lines that are rhymed mostly by assonance, the first being 5 feet, and the second 6 feet. Each has a final unstressed syllable missing, which is called catalexis.

This is immediately followed by 5 lines of iambic pentameter. Each of these 5 lines end in a THREE SYLLABLE rhyme. Additionally the 4th and 5th beat of each line maintain a two syllable rhyme. I dare you to write 5 lines that follow the same scheme!

From there it returns to the original meter, only this time progressing to 7 feet.

But let's look a little closer at this rhyming scheme. (to simplify I'll only talk about the last syllable of each line even though it's actually 3 syllable rhyme). The first two, Mark, and start, rhyme by means of assonance, meaning that their vowel sound is the same (their ending consonant sound is also very similar). The next word is dark which is an exact rhyme with the first line. The next is talk, which again rhymes with dark by means of assonance, especially with the way it is pronounced in the song. Next is crawl, which rhymes with talk, but note it does NOT rhyme with dark. Next is the word barf which DOES rhyme with dark but also rhymes with the previous word crawl. Then comes hall that doesn't really rhyme with its previous line, barf, but is an EXACT rhyme from crawl, two lines back. Then immediately followed by another exact rhyme in the word wall.

Now what is so weird about that is that after the iambic lines, when it returns to the original meter it gives the impression that it returns to the template laid out in the first two lines, in both meter and rhyme. But in reality "wall" rhymes with neither "Mark" nor "Start". But the odd progression of rhymes in between tricks you into thinking that it does.

To the average listener the whole thing seems like one long string of rhymes. To someone who pays more attention to this sort of thing, like me, it leaves me saying to myself “wait a minute how did he DO that???" It's actually very remarkable, crafty writing.

I won't go into the next part of the verse as I don't want to bore people, but you can take a look for yourself if you're interested. I had a hell of a time with the last two lines as the way the words are accented while he's singing them seem to differ from they'd be pronounced technically. If anyone wants to correct me on it feel free.

It is interesting to note that this is really only the first half of the first verse. The second half seemingly manages to follow this first half exactly in both meter and rhyme!

His lyrics are full of this type of excellent writing. It's rare to find this type of quality in modern lyricists. And no matter the content of a song, a person's ear, especially the young, will be drawn to quality over content. Instead you get people like Aerosmith who take the gimmick of female anatomy and apply such advanced rhyming schemes as:

Pink it was love at first sight
Pink when I turn out the light
Pink gets me high as a kite
And I think everything
Is going to be all right
No matter what we do tonight To those who doubt it: yes, Eminem is a poet. And a brilliant one. Eminem manages to make you travel into his world through his imagination. I have read on some forums that Marshall Mathers cannot be considered a poet because he uses vulgar words. Nonsense! François Villon, Alain Bosquet and many other have done it before him. His poetry is street poetry. The streets needed a voice and have found it in Marshall Mathers. He describes things in their roughness and uglyness and I like his sense of realism that is also mixed up with imaginary things from the world of Slim Shady. A young man, Dan , who was probably fed up with sugarcoated expressions has written this unfinished poem in 2000: http://kelvin7.net/archives/danthill/2000/02/28/irony_in_the_key_of_vulgarity Roses are red,
Violets are blue.
Fuck all this shit,
I just want you.
Fuck all these words,
It's useless protocol,
That accomplishes not,
A single damn thing,
A single coveted smile,
A single stolen kiss,or
A profitable touch, while
Reading these lines. You can find a lot of poetry in rap music. I'm not saying that Marshall Mathers is the only rapper to have lyrics that sound like poetry. I appreciate Saul Williams who is completely different from Eminem. But Eminem is original in his way of telling stories. “Drug Ballad” is a ballad through Marshall's mind. He expresses that he didn't feel well in his skin and that he wanted to escape problems through his drug and alcohol abuse: That's the sound of a bottle when it's hollow
When you swallow it all wollow and drown in your sorrow
And tomorrow you're probably going to want to do it again
What's a little spinal fluid between you and a friend? screw it
And what's a little bit of alcohol poisoning?
And what's a little fight?
It's a strong addiction and it can't be fixed, as the chorus expresses it well:
'cause every time I go to try to leave
Something keeps pullin' on my sleeve
I don't wanna, but I gotta stay
These drugs really got ahold of me 'cause every time I try to tell them no
They won't let me ever let them go
I'm a sucka all I gotta say
These drugs really got ahold of me
Marshall is like a prisoner who cannot walk away. The temptation is big and the sensations are so good. He wants to be high all the time and escape to his problems.
Many poets have been confronted to addiction problems. There is no need to be shocked by it. Baudelaire often talked about drugs and alcohol. Ernest Downson, who is well know for his sympathy for absinthe has written an ode to the green liquid: Absinthia Taetra
Green changed to white, emerald to opal; nothing was changed.
The man let the water trickle gently into his glass, and as the green clouded, a mist fell from his mind.
Then he drank opaline.
Memories and terrors beset him. The past tore after him like a panther and through the blackness of the present he saw the luminous tiger eyes of the things to be.
But he drank opaline.
And that obscure night of the soul, and the valley of humiliation, through which he stumbled, were forgotten. He saw blue vistas of undiscovered countries, high prospects and a quiet, caressing sea. The past shed its perfume over him, to-day held his hand as if it were a little child, and to-morrow shone like a white star: nothing was changed.
He drank opaline.
The man had known the obscure night of the soul, and lay even now in the valley of humiliation; and the tiger menace of the things to be was red in the skies. But for a little while he had forgotten.
Green changed to white, emerald to opal; nothing was changed.
While Ernest Dowson describes the beauty of the opaline, the Slim Shady LP and the Marshall Mathers LP have been written mostly under the unfluence of drugs like marijuana, ecstasy and mushrooms by Marshall. Both albums are very creative. “Drug Ballad” is a beautiful ode to drugs. Eminem makes you feel what he feels. His transformed perception of reality while he was taking drugs. He travelled to another universe: Get in your car, start it, and start drivin'
Over the island and cause a 42 car pile-up
[em's spaceman voice]earth calling, pilot to co-pilot
Look at the life on this planet, sir, no sign of it
All I can see is a bunch of smoke flyin'
And I'm so high that I might die if I go by it
Let me out of this place
I'm outta place
I'm in outer space
I've just vanished without a trace
I'm going to a pretty place now where the flowers grow
I'll be back in an hour or so

Marshall never told you to do the same, though. Eminem has given up drugs since the time he was on probation. He has decided to stay sober for Hailie. Taking drugs or not is your decision. It is up to you to stay drug free. I have never drunk absinthe. But I love Ernest Dowson's poem. Do you get my point?
Don't worry: Eminem may heave given up drugs and alcohol, but his imagination and his creative skills you enjoyed in the Eminem Show will also please you in his next. His work has never disappointed me. You don't need drugs to travel with Marshall through his mind when he gets high. Just close your eyes and let the words spin around you and guide you through this beautiful song."Drug Ballad" [Girl] Yeaaah, hahahaha...whooooo, shit!
[Em] (aight)
[Eminem] Guess what? I ain't coming in yet...
I'll come in a minute
[Eminem] Ayo...This is my love song...it goes like this [Eminem]
Back when Mark Walhberg was Marky Mark

We used to mix Hen' with Bacardi Dark

And everything's spinning
You're beginin' to think women

Then in a couple of minutes that bottle of Guiness is finished
You are now allowed to officially slap bitches
You have the right to remain violent and start wilin'
Start a fight with the same guy that was smart eyin' you
Get in your car, start it, and start drivin'
Over the island and cause a 42 car pile-up

I don't wanna, but I gotta stay
These drugs really got ahold of me 'Cause every time I try to tell them "no"
They won't let me ever let them go
I'm a sucka all I gotta say
These drugs really got ahold of me [Eminem]
In third grade, all I used to do
Was sniff glue through a tube and play rubix cube
17 years later I'm as Rude as Jude
Scheming on the first chick with the hugest boobs
I've got no game
And every face looks the same
They've got no name
So I don't need game to play
I just say whatever I want to whoever I want
Whenever I want, wherever I want, however I want
However, I do show some respect to few
As ecstacy got me standing next to you
Getting sentimental as fuck spillin' guts to you
We just met
But I think I'm in love with you
But you're on it too
So you tell me you love me too
Wake up in the morning like "yo, what the fuck we do?"
I gotta go bitch
You know I have stuff to do
'Cause if I get caught cheatin' then I'm stuck with you
But in the long run
These drugs are probably going to catch up sooner or later
But fuck it, I'm on one
So let's enjoy
Let the X destroy your spinal cord
So it's not a straight line no more
'Til we walk around looking like some wind-up dolls
Shit's sticking out of our backs like a dinosaur
Shit, six hits won't even get me high no more
So bye for now
I'm going to try to find some more [Chorus] [Eminem]
That's the sound of a bottle when it's hollow
When you swallow it all wollow and drown in your sorrow
And tomorrow you're probably going to want to do it again
What's a little spinal fluid between you and a friend? Screw it
And what's a little bit of alcohol poisoning?
And what's a little fight?
Tomorrow you'll be boys again
It's your life
Live it however you wanna
Marijuana is everywhere
Where was you brought up?
It don't matter as long as you get where you're going
'Cause none of the shit is going to mean shit where we're going
They tell you to stop, but you just sit there ignoring
Even though you wake up feeling like shit every morning
But you're young
You've got a lot of drugs to do
Girls to screw
Parties to crash
Sucks to be you
If I could take it all back now, I wouldn't
I would have did more shit that people said that I shouldn't
But I'm all grown up now and upgraded and graduated
Did better drugs and updated
But I've still got a lot of growing up to do
I've still got a whole lot of throwing up to spew
But when it's all said and done I'll be 40
Before I know it with a 40 on the porch telling stories
With a bottle of Jack
Two grandkids in my lap
Babysitting for Hailie while Hailie's out getting smashed [Chorus 2x]
[Same as previous, but 2nd time the last line is repeated like this] Drugs really got ahold of me
They really got ahold of me
'Cause drugs really got ahold of me
They really got ahold of me

THE WAY I AM

"The Way I Am » could have been called « Eminem Against The World » as well.
You can see an exceeded MC who is just fed up with everyone. At this time, Eminem had to face with so many pressures from his label, from the media, and even some fans who just didn't respect his privacy. You can feel the anger coming out of the rapper's chest. The song sounds authentic, because Eminem refers to real feelings, as usual. He lets his frustrations and all the negative emotions out. When we feel bad, when we feel that the pressure's too high, we need to slacken it the same way a pressure cooker does…and the healthiest way is to let our anger, rage and frustrations out.
That is exactly what Eminem does. The repetition of the /u/ and /e/ sounds at the beginning of the song accentuates the pressure. Eminem appears to be a real word and sound technician. He anticipates the effect created by each word. While listening to the song, you can feel that rage. Most of you probably know that Eminem's ascension to the top is rather uncommon. As I expressed it before, he came from the bottom to stardom and the pressures put on him at the beginning of his career were very high. All of a sudden, he couldn't eat peacefully outside without being recognized by fans who wouldn't leave him alone. His privacy was exposed and it was difficult to face with his new gained stardom. The media constantly targetted Eminem about his lyrical content. He was accused of being a bad example for the youth. Acts like Eminem and Marilyn Manson have always been easy targets for the media. They ave easy culprits from teenagers suicidal behavior or for any kind of foolishness. But Eminem brings the parents back to their responsibility : they should watch their kids. He's not responsible for every kid's drug addiction. As Paul Rosenberg replied sarcastically to Benzino on the phone, Eminem is « whatever you say he is.»
Eminem is somebody you cannot buy. He won't rap just to please your ears. He doesn't rap to get cash. He is used to speaking his mind and he doesn't care if people agree with him or not. Another thing that really angered Eminem was to be confused him with a « wigga ».

What is exactly a « wigga »?
A « wigga » is a term that means « white nigga » and that the black community uses for white men who are trying to imitate black men by talking « ebonics » and who wear the same clothes just to imitate the black community. For obvious reasons, Eminem cannot be classified as a « wigga ». Eminem grew up in the black hood of Detroit, his accent is natural for a white man who grew up among Blacks. Eminem embraced the hip hop community, hip hop is part of his life. You cannot reproach a foreigner who was born in America to act like an American, that would be silly. It's the same for Marshall Mathers. He is white, but his culture is hip hop, who would deny it? Eminem is fed up to have to reply to the same silly questions, he is fed up to be confused with a superficial pop icon and he just lets his rage out against all those white speakers and journalists who don't get him. All his life, he has been annoyed about his skin color, he can't stand such questions and shows it offenly. Marshall points out sarcastically :"I try not to look at it that way. Being white. I don't wake up every day and look in the mirror, 'Oh. I'm white'.
At the beginning of his career and before Benzino was trying to create an issue out of Eminem's skin color, « white » magazines used to question him more about his skin color :"At this point, I'm like "Come up with something new." I hate the same old questions. But it seems like "white" magazines such as Spin and Rolling Stone focus on my "whiteness" more than Black magazines."

When Eminem wrote « The Way I Am », many people were convinced he was disrespecting his fans. Honestly, I don't think so. I think that he was exceeded by some fans' behavior. The kind of fans who don't respect his privacy and who would stalk him for hours. He wanted them to understand that even if he's a public person, he's got a private life too.
Moments with Hailie, for instance, only belong to his private sphere. A respectful fan will get the message.« The Way I Am » are the feelings of a moment. The feelings of a man who is tired of all of us. So won't you just leave him alone until he feels better?

The Way I Am

Whatever..
Dre, just let it run
Aiyyo turn the beat up a little bit
Aiyyo.. this song is for anyone.. fuck it
Just shut up and listen, aiyyo..

I sit back with this pack of Zig Zags and this bag
of this weed it gives me the shit needed to be
the most meanest MC on this -- on this Earth
And since birth I've been cursed with this curse to just curse
And just blurt this berserk and bizarre shit that works
And it sells and it helps in itself to relieve
all this tension dispensin these sentences
Gettin this stress that's been eatin me recently off of this chest
and I rest again peacefully (peacefully)..
but at least have the decency in you
to leave me alone, when you freaks see me out
in the streets when I'm eatin or feedin my daughter
to not come and speak to me (speak to me)..
I don't know you and no,
I don't owe you a mo-therfuck-in thing
I'm not Mr. N'Sync, I'm not what your friends think
I'm not Mr. Friendly, I can be a prick
if you tempt me my tank is on empty (is on empty)..
No patience is in me and if you offend me
I'm liftin you 10 feet (liftin you 10 feet).. in the air
I don't care who is there and who saw me destroy you
Go call you a lawyer, file you a lawsuit
I'll smile in the courtroom and buy you a wardrobe
I'm tired of all you (of all you)..
I don't mean to be mean but that's all I can be is just me

Chorus: Eminem

And I am, whatever you say I am
If I wasn't, then why would I say I am?
In the paper, the news everyday I am
Radio won't even play my jam
Cause I am, whatever you say I am
If I wasn't, then why would I say I am?
In the paper, the news everyday I am
I don't know it's just the way I am

[Eminem]
Sometimes I just feel like my father, I hate to be bothered
with all of this nonsense it's constant
And, "Oh, it's his lyrical content -
- the song 'Guilty Conscience' has gotten such rotten responses"
And all of this controversy circles me
and it seems like the media immediately
points a finger at me (finger at me)..
So I point one back at 'em, but not the index or pinkie
or the ring or the thumb, it's the one you put up
when you don't give a fuck, when you won't just put up
with the bullshit they pull, cause they full of shit too
When a dude's gettin bullied and shoots up his school
and they blame it on Marilyn (on Marilyn).. and the heroin
Where were the parents at? And look where it's at
Middle America, now it's a tragedy
Now it's so sad to see, an upper class ci-ty
havin this happenin (this happenin)..
then attack Eminem cause I rap this way (rap this way)..
But I'm glad cause they feed me the fuel that I need for the fire
to burn and it's burnin and I have returned

Chorus

[Eminem]
I'm so sick and tired of bein admired
that I wish that I would just die or get fired
and dropped from my label and stop with the fables
I'm not gonna be able to top on "My Name is.."
And pigeon-holed into some pop-py sensation
to cop me rotation at rock'n'roll stations
And I just do not got the patience (got the patience)..
to deal with these cocky caucasians who think
I'm some wigger who just tries to be black cause I talk
with an accent, and grab on my balls, so they always keep askin
the same fuckin questions (fuckin questions)..
What school did I go to, what hood I grew up in
The why, the who what when, the where, and the how
'til I'm grabbin my hair and I'm tearin it out
cause they drivin me crazy (drivin me crazy).. I can't take it
I'm racin, I'm pacin, I stand and I sit
And I'm thankful for ev-ery fan that I get
But I can't take a SHIT, in the bathroom
without someone standin by it
No I won't sign your autograph
You can call me an asshole I'm glad.
